Meet Dr. Freeman
Dr. Stephen B. Freeman is a Hoosier native from South Bend. After graduating from Purdue University, he obtained his medical degree from Indiana University and then served 10 years in the U.S. Navy, where he completed his residency in Otolaryngology in Oakland, CA. Dr. Freeman completed an additional fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery in Indianapolis, IN. He served in the Navy in Guam, Virginia and California before resigning his commission as a Commander in 1990.
Dr. Freeman has a distinguished teaching career, in addition to his clinical expertise. He served as a clinical professor at the Uniformed Services University in Washington, D.C., an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, and as Chief of Otolaryngology at the Veterans Medical Center in Memphis. He returned to Indiana in 1991 when he joined Head and Neck Surgery Associates. Since then, he has been the Program Director of more than 30 fellows trained under his guidance.
Dr. Freeman's practice centers around two main areas: Sinus and Allergy, and Head and Neck Surgery. He developed the Freeman Frontal Sinus Stent that is used worldwide. Dr. Freeman is uniquely qualified, being board certified in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a certified Fellow of Otolaryngic Allergy.
Dr. Freeman strives to form a partnership with his patients to achieve their goals of being well, whether they are tired of their sinus and allergy problems or battling for their lives with cancer of the head and neck.
Concerning his dedication to his patients, Dr. Freeman says, "I am driven to be the best that I can be. I chose Ears, Nose and Throat because I like caring for all age groups struggling with a wide variety of ailments. The cancer patients are dear to me for their courage and willingness to form lifelong relationships. I have chartered my learning experience by reading, interacting with my mentors and undertaking many years of training in subspecialty care to enable me to provide the best and latest care."
"Although I provide excellent care in all aspects of ENT, I especially enjoy the challenges of treating patients with nasal, sinus and allergy disease. I provide the latest in diagnostic tools, medical treatment, dietary changes and immunotherapy, which usually returns the patient to good health. However, if surgery is necessary, I am one of the most experienced sinus surgeons in the state of Indiana. Frontal sinus disease is among the most threatening and challenging problems. I developed the Freeman Frontal Sinus Stent to provide a solution with minimal sinus surgery that has been utilized in many centers to treat hundreds of patients over the past eight years.
"As a member of CENTA, I am one of four head and necks surgeons who have the largest and most sophisticated private practice in the U.S. treating head and neck cancer patients. We have a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive care of the patient that offers the best solution to cancer that threatens quality of life and one's very existence. We are a team that forms lifelong relationships to treat, rehabilitate and care for head and neck cancer patients. I and my partners have the capability of treating the smallest to the most aggressive cancers and providing the best reconstructive procedures to restore appearance and function, where possible. Beginning with our founding member, Ronald Hamaker, we have trained over 30 surgeons from around the world in the subspecialty of head and neck cancer. They have carried on our philosophy of caring for and providing comprehensive treatment to patients struggling with head and neck cancer."
Dr. Freeman loves the outdoors and sharing time with family and friends. Whether at the lake or in his backyard, he is most relaxed outdoors. He loves boating, kayaking and sailing.
Dr. Freeman is available for consultation at the Carmel and Avon offices.
